Miri Masterchef

Having seen the experts at work Year 4 came back from the Marriott Hotel feeling inspired. It was now their turn in the kitchen! After talking about their favourite chocolates and possible combinations the children chose from a number of different ingredients and made their own range of individual chocolates.
In the careful hands of Elise, Cecilia, Donna and Esther the cooking room became a blur of molten chocolate, dried fruit, cherries, nuts, sprinkles, chocolate chips and other ingredients as different concoctions were created. Some fillings were put at the bottom, some at the top, some chocolates had one or two ingredients whilst others had them all! One thing was certain – the chocolates were all delicious.

The chocolates were displayed and tasted during our Exit Point the next day for all to share and enjoy.

Many thanks Elise, Cecilia and Donna for your invaluable help.

Swimming Success

April 23, 2012 by · No Comments · School Events

All the children took part in the swimming gala recently. It was wonderful to see the children in action showing off their skills. So much progress has been made by everyone – from children improving their technique and stroke, to beating their personal best times to those non swimmers who can now swim lengths independently or with swimming aids.

Fantastic swimming everyone!

Budding Scientists at work!

April 23, 2012 by · No Comments · IPC

Year 4 enjoyed the science elements of the Chocolate unit. They took part in a number of investigations which involved the children undertaking all elements of a science experiment – posing a question, determining the method by which to carry out the investigation, predicting, fair testing, concluding and writing up the experiment. The photos are from

The children investigated the best place to keep chocolate in school, different melting points and finally the best material for a chocolate wrapper. Chocolate wrappers need to keep the taste and smell of other foods, objects out. This involved the children wrapping the same type and amount of chocolate (fair testing) in different materials and putting them in a bag with some chopped onion (smelly socks were suggested!). We left the chocolate for a week and then compared the different wrappers. Different groups tested different materials and came up with their own conclusion and explanations as to what would make the best wrapper.

Marriott Trip

We all had a wonderful time when we went to the Marriott to celebrate the end of our Chocolate unit. In the pastry kitchen, Chefs Rasika and al-Farid showed us how to make chocolate pralines, including the use of chocolate molds, and the intricate process of colouring. We also saw how the chocolate coral was made by pouring chocolate over ice.
In the Borneo Baking Company’s supervisor Fauziah Tahir demonstrated how to make the perfect chocolate smoothie and were treated to a delicious chocolate muffin.

Many thanks to everyone for making the trip possible, especially Marcel Hinderer, Rita Chen and the chefs. It was wonderful to see professionals in action before making our own chocolates back at school. We all had a great time.

Chocolate Exit Point

What a wonderful afternoon Year 4 had sharing our learning with all of the parents. After sharing with them some of the work we’d done in IPC this term and its links to our Literacy and maths work the children sang and danced before testing their parents’ knowledge in “Are you smarter than a Year 4 chocolataire? The children than shared their work, talked about classroom displays and sampled some of the handmade chocolates that they’s made.

Year 4 learn about protecting the environment!

March 18, 2012 by · 2 Comments · IPC

As part of our IPC unit on Chocolate the children look at environmental issues linked to cacao farming, particularly ‘Slash and Burn.’ The children learnt what the consequences of ‘slash and burn’ are and how it can affect the environment. They then designed information posters and presented their work in a knowledgeable and creative way to the rest of the class. We look forward to sharing our learning with Year 3 during their unit on the Rainforest next term.

Visiting Storyteller

Book Week may be over but we always love reading in Year 4 so it was wonderful when Piers’ Grandma came in to read to the class whilst in Miri on holiday. Reading one of the ever popular Katie Morag’s series, the children listened entranced to what happened when Grannie Mainland went to stay on the Isle of Struay.
Many thanks Cathérine. We hoped that you enjoyed your visit as much as we did.

Book Week

March 4, 2012 by · 2 Comments · School Events

What a fantastic week everyone had during Book Week 2012. It started with a BANG after it was officially opened by scientist Alberta Eins…-Zwei-Drei from Lichtenstein. Teachers helped her carry out some cool science experiments and we heard all about the non-fiction books that were being read across the Primary School during the week.
Classroom doors were beautifully decorated, and during the week children were read a selection of wonderful books and took part in activities relating to non-fiction books.
The week went quickly and before we knew it was already Friday and time for the Book Week Parade. Children, staff and parents dressed in the most amazing costumes. From Gandhi and Nelson Mandela to famous scientists, artists, authors and sports stars, not to mention animals and dinosaurs, the hall was a sea of colour and action. Everyone looked truly amazing.
